The Government has promised a "tough" crackdown on people phoning while driving.

In December 2015, the suggestion was to increase the points penalty for car and van drivers from 3 to 4 points and see fines rise from £100 to £150 and 3 to 6 points for HGV and Bus drivers.

More recent sources indicate new penalties may be £200 fines and six points for non-HGV drivers for a first offence and up to £1,000 and disqualification for the second.

In the case of a new driver, their licence would be revoked and they would have to start the learning process from scratch.
