UK motorists may soon incur a £70 fine for parking on pavements if local authorities are granted new powers.

As part of its cycling and walking investment strategy, the Department for Transport (DoT) is currently 'examining pavement parking outside London'.

The Local Government Association (LGA) is asking councils to clamp down on the practice, saying that parking on pavements is putting pedestrians at risk. They hope that the ban, which has been in force in London since 1974, will be rolled out across the country.
